Boston, MA, January 30 and February 1, 2025 – The Boys of St. Paul’s Choir School are set to join the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Boston Lyric Opera in a performance of Korngold’s operatic masterpiece, Die Tote Stadt, under the baton of Andris Nelsons. This highly anticipated performance marks the boys' second collaboration with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Tanglewood Festival Chorus this season, following their critically acclaimed participation in Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 at Symphony Hall this past October.
"We’re deeply honored to once again join the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, and we’re delighted to collaborate with the Boston Lyric Opera for the first time in years," said Brandon Straub, Director of Music at St. Paul’s Choir School. "Our choristers bring a unique expertise to performing choral-symphonic works of this calibre and have been working hard to bring their best to this production. These transformative musical experiences have the power to shape the lives of our young musicians in profound ways."
While Die Tote Stadt has been produced in Boston before, this marks the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s first-ever presentation of the work, as well as Maestro Andris Nelsons' conducting debut of the piece. According to Opera Wire, “The performance reflects Nelsons’ tenure with the BSO in his tenth anniversary season, building on a legacy of stellar opera performances that have included critically acclaimed concert versions of Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier, Puccini’s Suor Angelica, Mozart’s Don Giovanni, and Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk.”
Die Tote Stadt is a haunting tale of grief and loss, with complex characters brought to life through an incredibly cinematic score. The boys' offstage choral contributions are intended to create an ethereal, angelic effect, adding to the dramatic atmosphere of the performance. The Boys of St. Paul’s Choir School will join the ranks of other renowned children’s choirs who have performed this work, including the Tomtberga School Children’s Choir, the Longborough Youth Chorus, the Cambridge, MA Children’s Chorus, and the Finnish National Opera Children’s Chorus.
St. Paul’s Choir School, located adjacent to the historic St. Paul’s Parish in Cambridge, MA, is the only all-boys Catholic choir school in the United States. Offering a rigorous academic program interwoven with world-class choral training, the boys sing as either choristers (grades 5-8) or pre-choristers (grades 3-4). The choristers have a long-standing history of collaborating with leading Boston-based ensembles, such as Emmanuel Music, BYSO, Enigma Opera, Boston Ballet, and the Harvard University Choruses, in addition to the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Boston Lyric Opera.
